  • Source Routing

Source routing sometimes called path addressing ensures that injected packets are sent via a selected route or path i.e. via specified routers and other network devices such as firewalls with routing capabilities. By using source routing, an attacker chooses the routing path that is most advantageous to the intended attack. An attacker attempting to spoof or masquerade as a legitimate host can use source routing to direct packets to the server in a path identical to the victim's computer.

Under normal circumstances static or dynamic routing will determine the path taken by packets traversing the network based on the packets destination IP address.
