Adware is a well known type of malware and any systems are infected with this type of malware. When this type of software is deployed onto a victim's system, it will display ads, pop-ups, and nag screens, and may even change the start page of the browser. This kind of malware is typically spread through a download with other software or when the victim visits a website that deploys it stealthily onto the victim system.
When adware is deployed onto a victims system along with legitimate software by a vendor who is paid to include the malware, it still fits the definition of malware, because many victims are not aware that they are allowing this additional item to be installed.
